At What Age Should a Child First Visit the Orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that most children have an orthodontic screening by age 7. This allows Drs. Kaplan and Campbell to evaluate the timing and necessity of orthodontic treatment. Many local dentists trained to identify early orthodontic issues might refer you to our office before age 7 if they have concerns.
Why Are Children Evaluated at Such an Early Age?
Early diagnosis and treatment can:
- Guide erupting teeth into optimal positions
- Preserve space for permanent teeth
- Reduce the risk of damage to protruded front teeth
If early treatment is needed, Drs. Kaplan and Campbell can manage the growth of the jaw and incoming permanent teeth, regulate the width of dental arches, and address issues like thumb sucking and abnormal swallowing or speech problems. Early intervention often simplifies future treatments and supports better dental health and growth.
Does Early Treatment Benefit All Children?
Not all children need early orthodontic treatment. Some issues are best addressed during the teenage years when all permanent teeth have emerged. If early intervention is not yet required, Drs. Kaplan and Campbell will create a personalized treatment plan and place the child in our orthodontic supervisory program. This program is crucial as it allows for regular monitoring and preparation for future treatment.
What is the Orthodontic Supervisory Program?
The orthodontic supervisory program is designed for children who are not yet ready for active treatment. This program involves:
- Monitoring the eruption of permanent teeth
- Referral for early removal of baby teeth as needed
Patients are seen every 6-8 months at no additional cost, helping to determine the best time to begin treatment and ensure optimal results.
In Addition to a Beautiful Smile, What Are Some Other Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment?
Orthodontic treatment can:
- Improve bite function
- Enhance oral hygiene
- Prevent excessive wear on teeth
- Increase the longevity of natural teeth
If a Child Receives Early Treatment, Will This Prevent the Need for Braces as an Adolescent?
Early treatment means there may be a later, comprehensive phase of treatment. However, because all permanent teeth are not fully erupted during early treatment, a shorter phase of comprehensive treatment may still be needed during adolescence. In some cases, additional treatment may not be necessary.
Do We Still Need to See Our Family Dentist During Orthodontic Treatment?
Yes, continuing regular visits to your family dentist is essential during orthodontic treatment. Braces and other appliances require extra effort to maintain oral hygiene, so we recommend check-ups and cleanings every 6 months to ensure optimal dental health.
