Orthodontic Retainers

Essential for Long-Term Smile Maintenance

Wearing your retainers is crucial to keep the benefits of your orthodontic treatment lasting a lifetime. Retainers are designed to preserve your newly straightened smile and ensure your teeth remain in their ideal positions. After your braces are removed, adhering to your retainer regimen will help you maintain a beautiful smile for years to come. Drs. Kaplan and Campbell will determine the best retainer type for you to maintain your treatment result.

Why Retainers Matter

Once your braces are off, retainers are necessary to stabilize the dental corrections achieved during your treatment. The bone and soft tissues around your teeth need time to adjust and solidify. Therefore, it’s essential to wear your retainers as instructed to prevent any unwanted movement of your teeth and avoid the need for re-treatment.

Types of Orthodontic Retainers

Removable Retainers

Retainers should be worn indefinitely, as teeth can shift over time. It is important to wear your retainer every night for the rest of your life or as long as you want straight teeth. Drs. Kaplan and Campbell will schedule regular check-ups and adjust your retainer use as necessary.

A discreet, transparent plastic retainer similar to Invisalign® aligners.

Caring for Your Removable Retainers

Proper care of your removable retainers is essential to ensure they function effectively and last as long as possible. Follow these guidelines to keep your retainers in optimal condition:

  • Clean Regularly: Brush your retainer with a toothbrush and mild liquid soap and cool or cold water before and after use. For a more thorough cleaning, use a retainer-cleaning solution like Retainer Brite. Rinse thoroughly to remove any soap or cleaning solution residue.
  • Avoid Excessive Heat: Retainers are sensitive to high temperatures. Keep them away from heaters, dishwashers, car dashboards, or any area where temperatures exceed 115°F (46°C).
  • Proper Storage: Always store your retainer in its designated case when not in use. Protect it from pets, who may chew on it.
  • Replacement: While your initial treatment includes one set of retainers, they may need replacement over time. If lost or damaged, replacements may incur a charge. Contact our office immediately if your retainer becomes loose or breaks.

Fixed Retainers (Bonded Wire)

Fixed retainers are intended to remain in place. If your family dentist identifies any issues with cleanliness that could affect your gums or bone, the wire might need to be replaced with a removable retainer. Drs. Kaplan and Campbell will provide guidance on using the removable retainer if needed. Regular monitoring by your family dentist during your six-month checkups is essential to ensure the fixed retainer continues to protect your teeth effectively.
